History
The long-cherished dream of establishing a Dental College in Alappuzha became a reality in June 2014 when Shri Oommen Chandy, the then Chief Minister of Kerala, inaugurated the college at a grand ceremony held at Vandanam, Alappuzha. At the same event, Sri Ramesh Chennithala, the Home Minister of Kerala, laid the foundation stone for the new building of the dental college.

The inauguration was presided over by Shri V.S. Sivakumar, the Health Minister, and Shri K.C. Venugopal, the Member of Parliament, was the Chief Guest. Other notable dignitaries included:

In October 2014, the college commenced classes for the first batch of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students. The college is affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and offers 50 seats in the BDS program.

Dr. M.K. Mangalam, former Registrar of Kerala University of Health and Allied Science, and JDME, served as the first Principal of Government Dental College, Alappuzha.

Infrastructure Development

The college is currently functioning from the Government T.D. Medical College campus, while the construction of a new, independent building is in its final stages of completion. The new campus, built on a 5-acre plot with an estimated cost of Rs. 60 crores, will be equipped with modern amenities and advanced facilities to enhance the academic and clinical training experience for students.

The project was entrusted to M/s HLL Infra Tech Services Limited (HITES), a subsidiary of HLL Lifecare Ltd (HLL). Once completed, the new building will have Postgraduate (PG) programs in 9 departments, offering advanced training in various dental specialties. The shift to the new building is expected to happen soon, marking a significant milestone in the college's growth.

The Government Dental College, Alappuzha, remains committed to offering the highest standards of dental education and patient care. With the recent infrastructure expansion, the college looks forward to growing its postgraduate programs and research initiatives, strengthening its role as a premier institution in dental education in Kerala.
